Most of the villages surrounding the Pench Tiger Reserve, M.P. do not have organised methods of waste disposal.
While setting up the compost unit in Kohka Middle School , we advised the students to get together and collect the dry garbage and plastic in one location, so as to enable it to be dealt with in an organised fashion.
Just last month, we noticed that our advice has been heeded. There it was, a ‘kuda daan’ at the back of the school, next to the compost unit.
It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room- our ever growing population!
Jugaad came down all the way from Delhi to share with our students their brilliant creativity with waste. As closure to the waste module for the year, we brought in the experts to teach our students at the E-Base exactly what to do with the most commonly found waste in their houses!
We have realized one thing- Composting requires patience and dedication.
We’ve finally surfaced! If you’re wondering why we’ve been so quiet all December, we should let you know, we’ve been putting in a little of that extra effort for the winter sowing.
Just like in July, we sowed our seeds with hope. And, looks like we’re going strong!
Perhaps one of the biggest elephants in the room, waste, was literally welcomed to the E-Base this workshop. To introduce students to waste and its hazards, Green the Gap jumped in to share a little of their knowledge with our students at the E-Base.
As part of our E-Base program for the year, we have taken it upon ourselves to not only go organic, but also be sustainable! Here’s introducing our second project for the year-
Kohka Middle School now has a very exciting addition- a compost unit!
At this moment, we are more than just blue. We are borderline furious! Our second attempt at the Palak and Methi plants got nullified by terribly untimely rain in October. We thought we had left the monsoon behind in September, but it was just lurking around the corner.
The third E-Base in the world is incidentally set up, once again, in India. It’s time we connect the two! Thank you so much Robert Swan for this very personal message all the way from Ladakh to us, here at Conservation Wildlands.
There’s a whole lot of work to be done and we’re right behind you!

We were a team on a mission and the students’ determination was at another high. Perhaps, that’s why the rain finally decided to stop and let us get on with our big task at hand. With a relatively clear morning and noon, we got a good amount of time to sow our seeds.
