Introducing the various birds

Birds: one of the most delicate and elegant creatures on the planet. This week, the children received an introduction to birds – their anatomy, features, flight, nesting, feeding, grooming, flocking, roosting and breeding behaviours and migration patterns.

They worked with real nests and feathers, caught ‘bird food’ in bug boxes for a closer look, measured lengths and wingspans and went exploring around the lake armed with binoculars and Grimmett guides.

They saw 14 different species of birds and a whole bunch of creepy crawlies and fish. At the end, they collected all the garbage – plastic bags, wrappers and such from around the lake so that it doesn’t end up in any unsuspecting animal’s tummy!
